This is a great set for the price, you get 2.5 lb (handle only), 5 lb, 7.5 lb, 10 lb, and 12.5 lb options all in one space saving well made package. The system for switching the weights is easy just a locking pin that shifts from one weight to the other with none of the cumbersome open end switching of older dumbbell sets. The cradle that holds each weight is slotted and keeps the whole set locked in place during storage. For the money you just aren't going to find a better dumbbell set. I would have liked a booklet on proper muscle movement during lifting and a few recommended exercises but all that information is easily found online or through a trainer. The pins feel sturdy when you are doing the actual lifting, they rattle a little but are securely locked in place for safe exercising.

I purchased The Bowflex 552 AND 1090 adustable dumbbells so I have things to compare this to. i have also used the very uncomfortble and goofy looking power block (which I do not like). I needesd lighter dumbbells to bring to my clients homes (people who don't need to use DB's over 25 lbs). In comparison the Jillian Michaels Db's are not nearly as good as the adjustable Bowflex. The DB often gets stuck when pulling it out unless pulled out perfectly straight, they neglected to put a spacer between each weight to avoid this, & it get very annoying after a while. Often another plate will roll or fall off the platform if you're not careful. It's just poorly designed. There is no locking mechanism to stop you from picking up the weight if a different weight is accidently selected on either end of the dumbbell (not a huge deal but just no insight went towards that). The worst part is there is no permanent locking mechanism to hold the weights in place once off the rack. You can... Read more

After a lot of consideration, I ended up purchasing these weights to use with P90X Extreme Home Fitness Workout Program - 13 DVDs, Nutrition Guide, Exercise Planner. The program calls for a lot of different weights, and I was tired of leaving 8 different dumbbells lying around on the floor of my den. After using these for roughly three months, I am very pleased with them, and with a few exceptions, they work great for P90X.

CONSTRUCTION/DESIGN- As of 2/16/10, the model being sold on Amazon is the 2009 model, which came out in September 2008 and is the most current model available. There is no 2010 model, despite what many third party sellers claim (I have confirmed this with Nautilus). I used the 552 dumbells with my P90X workout and I have to say they made life a heck of a lot easier. It couldn't be easier to select the appropriate weight with these things, and with limited time between excersizes, these were golden. The construction is sturdy; not once did I feel any uneasiness in using them. Even moves where the dumbells were lifted quickly and brought back down didn't cause any issues with the locking mechanism of the dumbells. The only slight issue is the overall length of the dumbells. The width is manageable but the length can cause a few issues in maybe 5% of the excersizes performed. An example of this is doing concentration curls with both arms simultaneously. I ended up having to alternate to get around the length of the dumbell. All in all it is quite easy to work around this small issue and it doesn't impact the 5 star rating for me especially considering that having used the block alternative as well, the bowflex ones caused a lot less issues... I was torn between these and the PowerBlock dumbells I kept reading about. I had a chance to check out the 2008 and prior model Bowflex Select Tech's at Dicks Sporting Goods, and I remember thinking about how easy it was to spin the dials to adjust the weights.

My only concern and hesitation was that a few reveiws mentioned the possibility of the weights rattling and people were worried they could fall off? I had not heard this before, so I researched it more and although the PowerBlock dumbells had gotten good reviews, I simply could not get past how ugly they were, and the fact that they used a magnetic pin to hold the weights in.

I decided to spend the few extra dollars on these 2009 model Select Techs (assuming any prior issues they may have had were corrected) and boy am I glad I did, they are AWESOME! Be prepared for the most annoying, frustrating, complicated hour+ of your life. More complex then the solar system, this stand will arrive in pieces. Accompanied with instructions that not even God herself could understand. The only thing that kept me from reaching astronomical anger levels was the fact I received the stand for FREE. I have been in workout/diet mode since July, and finally decided to invest in some weights. I had remembered those tempting Bowflex infomercial's, and decided to YouTube some Bowflex dumbbell videos. Well, after about 30min of watching, I felt I really wanted a pair for my living room.

I visited the Bowflex website and decided on the 1090 model dumbbells.

This is a must if you don't have something to sit your dumbells on. It is very sturdy and has either roller wheels or stationary feet you can easily install. It really is quality construction and I am glad that I have it.

I would have given it 5 stars...but the instructions on how to assemble it are brutal. It won't take a rocket scientist to do it, but it will take a little figuring out (common sense) to know how to do a couple of things like attaching the straps to the base of the dumbell platform.

Be on the lookout for sales on this item. I ordered the 552 dumbells and the stand came with it free. I bought them through Amazon.com.

Once you get this stand together, it's great--looks good and is the perfect height for the 552 SelectTechs.

But boy, is it a pain to put together! The included allen wrench and hex wrenches are very cheap and make it difficult to put any serious torque on the screws. And yes, some of the holes were drilled just a little bit off-center, so it takes some muscle to tighten them. I busted my knuckles a few times, but got a great workout before I had a chance to use the dumbbells.
